“The accused, Subramani (27), from an intermediate caste, exploited the poverty of the Dalit minor girl and raped her. The accused should be served charges under the Goondas Act and should not be given bail till the completion of the trial,” said Kathir, the executive director of NGO Evidence.

Following an enquiry, Kathir said that the victim had lost her father 12 years ago and her mother was a daily wage labourer. The victim was left with no choice but to take up work too, he said.

On August 30, Subramani had asked the victim’s mother to send her daughter for construction work and accordingly, she was sent to work on September 1. The girl, however, had not returned to her house after work and Subramani remained unreachable. A missing complaint was then filed and the police on a search found her tied up in a warehouse, around 15 km away from Pottikampalayam. Upon inquiries, she informed the police that Subramani had tied her up and raped her. The victim also informed that the accused forcefully removed her anklet and sold it. Subramani then threatened her and raped her repeatedly, said Kathir.
