Police said that Hyder Ali, 52, the party’s district secretary and resident of Kangeyam was on his way in a two-wheeler with the contraband. Police intercepted him during a vehicle check near Anupperpalayam.

As he gave contradictory statements on the contents of a bag in his possession, the police examined and found them to be banned tobacco items. Inquiries revealed that Hyder Ali had bought the tobacco items in wholesale and supplied them to several shops in the locality for sales.

The police arrested him and seized the gutkha products. He was then produced in a court and lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison.
