He made the plea a day after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the proposal to establish an Archaeological University in the country.

“Tamil Nadu is the first state to run diploma courses at Egmore Government Museum and in World Tamil Research Centre our government runs courses for one year and two years on archaeology. In Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) close to 45 percentage of archaeologists are from Tamil Nadu primarily due to the courses offered in the state and due to these reasons I urge the Union government to consider setting up of Archaeological University in the state,” said Pandiarajan, while addressing reporters, in Chennai.

In the Union Budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Saturday, the Centre announced setting up of Archaeological University in the country. The Minister said that Tamil Nadu is the appropriate place for setting up the announced Archaeological University and Centre should carry out study in setting up of the university in the state.

He further said that in Tamil Nadu many specialised universities were setup for the first time in the country such as Music and Fine Arts University, Sports University, Fisheries University and so on.
