Man tries to harass woman on train, held

A 40-year-old man was arrested and remanded to judicial custody here after he allegedly attempted to harass a woman passenger en route in a train from Chennai.

According to sources, an engineering student from Mylapore on Thursday night boarded the same air-conditioned coach of Tiruchy-bound Rockfort Express as Muthukumar (40). Muthukumar occupied the upper berth while thecollege girl was reserved the middle berth.


While passengers were fast asleep after a few hours, Muthukumar woke up and reportedly moved around only in his innerwear.


Suddenly, he attempted to misbehave with the girl but she woke up and screamed for help, sources said.


By that time, the train had reached Srirangam railway station and the girl then lodged a complaint with the Railway police. Based on it, Sub-Inspector Lakshmi registered a case under three sections of the IPC, including sexual harassment ofwomen Act.


The accused was subsequently arrested.


During interrogation, Muthukumar, a resident of Karaikudi in Sivaganga district, told the police that he was working as an engineer with a private firm in Chennai and that he was on the way to meet his mother on account of Pongal holidays.


Muthukumar was later produced before courtand was remanded under judicial custody tillJanuary 31.
