CHENNAI: Welcoming the sentence pronounced by the city Mahila court in the Anna University sexual assault case, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday said that the verdict has shattered the petty-minded intentions of those trying to score political brownie points even from the injustice inflicted on the student.
Dubbing the verdict as the reply of police to those pretending to care about the safety of women in the State, Stalin said, "The Tamil Nadu Police have responded through their action to those who merely pretend to care about women's safety."
In a message posted on his 'X' handle shortly after the Mahila court judge pronounced the verdict, Stalin said, "With the verdict now delivered, even the Mahila Court has come forward to commend the police for their exemplary work in this case. The petty-minded intentions of a few who sought to score political brownie points even from the injustice meted out to a young woman have been shattered.
"During the investigation, the High Court itself appreciated the handling of the case. We investigated the case fairly and swiftly, and completed it within just five months, thereby securing severe punishment for the offender," Stalin added.
"I welcome and express my gratitude for the court's verdict, which, in line with the recent amendment moved by us that there shall be no premature release for sexual offenders, has imposed a strict sentence without any concession such as remission," said Stalin, who drew a distinction between the AU case and Pollachi sexual assault case to 'demonstrate' his and the previous AIADMK government's concern for women safety.
