Lifer not able to sleep tries to end life

A life convict, admitted to the hospital inside the Vellore Central Prison, attempted suicide by slitting his throat during the early hours on Friday as he could not sleep properly. The incident has sent shock waves among the prisoners, the jail authorities and the hospital staff as well. Bagayam police have registered a case and are investigating.

Police said that Pandi @ Burma Pandi (32) was undergoing life sentence in a murder case. As he was running high temperature, authorities admitted him to the jail hospital a few days ago.

He objected to another patient, who was reportedly being treated for some mental ailment, talking in loud voice with the jail staff. It led to an argument. An infuriated Pandi, who alleged that he could not sleep because of their conversations, reportedly rushed to the toilet and slit his throat with a blade. He was admitted to Vellore GH and stable.
