Diploma students, who failed to finish the course, requested the Higher Education Department to give one last opportunity for them to complete the course by conducting exams. The students also cited a recent development in Anna University, where the University gave a last chance to more than 10,000 engineering students who failed to complete the course, by conducting exams.

A senior official from the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), which administrates the students who are pursuing higher education in the State, told DT Next that the Department conducts examinations to diploma students pursing various courses and several candidates are yet to qualify for the award of diploma due to arrears in some subjects.

He said that as per the rule every diploma student is given three years’ time (six chances) on supplementary basis to complete the arrears subjects after the completion of course. “Even after completing six supplementary chances, two more additional opportunities are given in the next academic year,” he pointed out adding that students, who exhausted the additional three years and additional one year chances have currently requested for one more grace chance.

According to him, there are more than 15,000 students from 1984 to 2013 batches who have not completed the course. The arrears range from single subject to even multiple subjects, he said. “Considering the future and welfare of these supplementary students, the DOTE, under Higher Education Department, has decided to conduct exams in October this year and April next year so that students could write the exams and complete the course,” he said adding, “These students will be asked to appear for the equivalent subject in the current scheme of study.”

He also said that the students, who are appearing for the arrear exams, should pay enhanced fees of Rs 750 for each subject. The official said that per year about 11 lakh students join various diploma courses across all colleges including governmentinstitutions.
