Police said that five temples such as the Mariamman temple, Kaliamman temple, Om Sakthi temple, Pon Mariamman temple and the Salem Chinna Mariamman temple were broken into on Saturday night by unknown miscreants, who decamped with cash after breaking the hundis. The total loss is being estimated by the temple priests.

On Sunday morning, residents were shocked on seeing the gates of the Salem Chinna Mariamman temple open. When they entered, they found that the hundi was broken and cash missing. Later, they found that four other temples in the vicinity were also robbed.

Similarly, miscreants also broke into the house of one Mahalingam in the same area and stole 2 sovereigns of gold jewellery and a pair of silver anklets.

Further investigations revealed that the village was shrouded in darkness when the robberies took place. An inspection of the junction box revealed that the cable wires were burnt resulting in power outage. Investigations are on to nab the culprits.
