Hindu outfit protest against Ranjith’s remarks on Chola king

Condemning his alleged remarks against Chola emperor Raja Raja Cholan, members of a Hindu outfit staged a protest and attempted to burn the effigy of film director Pa Ranjith, in Thanjavur on Friday.

The protesters led by Hindu Makkal Katchi youth wing (Tamil Nadu) Secretary Karthick Rao assembled in front of the railway station and raised slogans against Ranjith. They also demanded the immediate arrest of the director for his controversial comments against the Chola king.


The protesters also attempted to burn Ranjith’s effigy. However, police personnel, who were present at the spot to prevent any untoward incidents, prevented them from burning it. The protesters continuedto raise slogans and attempted to block the road. Subsequently, the police arrested as many as 32 people for participating in the protest.


The director’s speech at a public meeting in Tiruppanandal on June 5 sparked controversy among various people, after he said Dalits turned landless people in the Deltaregion during the emperor’s reign, which he said was not a ‘golden period’ as cited in history, but a ‘dark period’ for the depressed.


The director also took a dig at the Devadasi system and said it wasintroduced during the regime of Raja Raja Cholan.
