Guru’s death anniversary: Section 144 imposed

Anticipating a huge turnout form different parts of the state for the first death anniversary of former president of Vanniyar Sangam Kaduvetti Guru, the Ariyalur police have imposed Section 144 across the district.

The death anniversary of Guru falls on February 1. A group of youth, led by Manikandan from Vazhuvur village in Nagapattinam had arranged a mega event to mark the occasion. However, the police in an attempt to maintain law&order and ensure peace during the event, have imposed Section 144. Police have enforced the ban order anticipating that some unscrupulous elements might create trouble in places like Meensuruti and Kaduvetti during the event which is set to be held from Jan 31 to Feb10. The RDO (Udayarpalayam) ordered to implement the Section 144.


BJP functionary killed in brawl


A BJP youth wing leader was murdered in Aranthangi in a clash between two groups over a property issue on Thursday.


According to police, S Selva Vinayagam (26), president of BJP youth wing, Aranthangi union, had a running dispute over a piece of land with his neighbours.


A case was going on at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court over the issue. It is said that despite the case in the HC, Selva Vinayagam, had raised paddy on the disputed land and the crops were ready for harvest.


When Selva Vinayagam was about to harvest, a group of villagers, led by Arjunan, came to the spot and picked up a quarrel with him. Insisting that the matter was in court, they demanded Selva Vinayagam to seek police permission for harvesting the paddy in the disputed land.


On Thursday, Selva Vinayagam tried to harvest the paddy. This led to a quarrel. Suddenly, one of the group members, attacked Selva Vinyagam with weapons and killed him.
