Former co-op society secy held for swindling money

A 50-year-old former secretary of the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Credit Society at Maniyakaranpatti village in Dindigul district was arrested on Monday on charges of swindling depositors’ money.

The accused identified as Murugan, a resident of Kulathupatti, was alleged to have swindled over Rs 17 lakh,sources said.


Investigations revealed that several villagers residing in Maniyakaranpatti and Vadamadurai obtained loans from the society by mortgaging their jewellery during 2017-2018, when Murugan served as its secretary.


In a recent audit carried out by Ilamathy, the director of the credit society, it was found that the accounts were not properly maintained by Murugan. Though many had repaid their loans, he did not maintain payment receipts. It later cameto light that he defrauded a total of Rs 17.37 lakh.


Subsequently, Ilamathy lodged a complaint with the police, who registered a case against the accused before arresting him. The accused was produced before the Madurai Judicial Magistrate and remanded in custody.


Two others, including Vasuki (35), writer, and Mahalakshmi, jewel appraiser, who are wanted in connection with the crime are absconding, sources said.
