E-vehicles: Anna University to conduct study on research challenges

The Anna University has proposed to explore the research challenges and opportunities in the design and control of electric vehicles. This came after the State government announced that e-vehicles would not attract road tax till the end of 2022 to encourage investment by automobile industry.

Anticipating a huge demand for engineers trained in the field in the coming years, Anna University research faculty would explore the recent trends in the development of electrical vehicles.

A senior official from the university told DT Next that with rapid advancement in power, electronics, mechanics and information system, the development of electrical vehicle has become more attractive.

“The continuous usage of fossil fuels leads to deficiency and force to find the alternative,” he added, but pointed out that the soaring oil price in countries dependent on imported fossil fuels were facing an alarming situation wherein oil consumption is expected to increase by 55 per cent by 2030.

“These aspects make electrical vehicles the most interesting area of research,” he added.

According to him, the university’s Department of Electronics and Communications would organise a detailed study involving faculty and research members of the institution to serve the engineering community to realise the role in manufacturing e-vehicles.

The researchers would get a comprehensive knowledge on the major components that would be incorporated in e-vehicles and the types of electrical drives used in it.

Similarly, a detailed study would also be undertaken with regard to the architecture design for the vehicle, and electrical protection and control system, besides providing a broad idea of energy storage solutions.

The official said that in the area of battery charging systems, which is challenging for many countries, it was necessary to develop new topologies and control strategies. “This part will also be explored during the programme,” he added.
