Elderly man killed in elephant attack in Erode 

A 72-year-old man was found trampled to death by a wild elephant near Anthiyur in Erode district on Friday.

According to police, Kenjaan, 72 from Bargur hills near Anthiyur had ventured into the forests to graze cattle. He used to take the animals daily for grazing in morning and shepherd them back by evening. As usual he left on Thursday morning, but did not return home even after dark. His cattle however returned on their own around 6pm. On suspicion the villagers informed the forest department over the missing person.


On Friday morning, forest department staff and villagers found the elderly man lying dead. They confirmed that he was killed in an elephant attack as there were foot marks of the jumbo. The officials said that elephants frequent Basuvanpallam, where the elderly man was found dead to consume water from the streams flowing in the locality.


“One such elephant might have attacked him, said an official. On receiving information, the Bargur police rushed to the spot and sent the body of the deceased for a post mortem at Anthiyur Government Hospital.
