CHENNAI: Residents of Parandur, Eganapuram and other surrounding villages erupted in celebrations after Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay officially announced in the Assembly that the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project would be scrapped.

They burst crackers, distributed sweets and even organised street meetings and thanked the CM for fulfilling his assurance to cancel the project. “We’ll remember August 24 forever.

Today, we’ve gained independence for the second time, and our CM has given us this freedom. We’ve been protesting the airport proposal for nearly 1,500 days in various forms, but received no support from the previous government.

Out CM fulfilled his promise by scrapping the project. After five years, we can finally sleep peacefully today,” said G Subramaniyan, president, Parandur Protest Committee.
