Dog saves master’s family from snake in Madurai, dies

The dog that saved the lives of five of a family in Koodal Nagar, Madurai, from a venomous snake on Sunday, died of snake bite much to the agony of the family late on Monday night.

The pet, Bully Kutta or Indian Mastiff, behaved unusually and barked aloud on sighting a venomous snake (Kannadi virian) underneath the car parked inside the house on Sunday evening. It did not allow its master to go near the car and subsequently the family members noticed the snake and tried to keep the dog away.

The heroic dog fought with the snake, which in retaliation bit the dog. Poisoned, the dog slipped into a coma and later died. The snake, which got bitten by the dog also died, sources said. C Merilraj, Veterinary Assistant, Madurai, said in response to emergency call, the pet dog was rushed to veterinary care hospital and anti-snake venom was administered to it. But, unfortunately, the dog succumbed, he added.
