CHENNAI: PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has strongly criticised the DMK government for announcing compensation for crop losses almost a year after the damage occurred, questioning whether this reflects its concern for farmers.
He said crops across Tamil Nadu, including Cauvery delta districts, were severely affected by heavy rains in November and December last year. However, compensation has been announced only now, and even its disbursal timeline remains unclear. He described the delay as negligence and betrayal of farmers.
Anbumani pointed out that paddy crops over nearly five lakh acres were damaged, yet compensation was withheld for months. The government has now approved Rs 289.63 crore, which is just 0.073% of the State Budget. He said the amount is insignificant for the government but crucial for farmers' seasonal livelihoods.
He further criticised the reduction of compensation to Rs 5,191 per acre, against the earlier promise of Rs 6,800 and demands for Rs 40,000. No relief has been announced yet for crops damaged this year, he added.
