Differently abled man attempts self-immolation in Krishnagiri

COIMBATORE: A 50-year-old differently-abled man attempted self-immolation at the Krishnagiri Collector's Office on Monday over a land dispute..

Police said the victim, Venkadesh, a resident of Shoolagiri, sustained severe injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Krishnagiri.

They said Venkadesh had come to the collectorate for the grievance day meeting and had registered his petition in the office. He then came out without meeting the officials, and emptied a bottle of petrol on himself and set himself ablaze.

Hearing his screams, the police personnel and fire service staff rushed to his rescue and extinguished the fire. He was then sent by ambulance to the government hospital, where he is undergoing treatment with around 60 per cent burns.

Preliminary inquiries by police revealed that he took the extreme step over a land dispute with another person. Further investigations are under way.
