Curtail ban period to 45 days: fishermen

Fishermen from the region urged the state government to increase the monetary assistance during the fishing ban period and reduce the number of days as their livelihood has been in shambles and asked the government to shift the ban period to November and December which would also help them to avoid natural calamities due to monsoon.

Chennai: A Thajudeen, the General Secretary of Tamil Nadu Meenavar Peravai said, “We have been demanding exemption in tax for the diesel we procure and the governments are yet to pay heed to our pleas. Since the 61 days ban period is very lengthy, we have been demanding it to be reduced to 45 days and that too from November to December so that the fishermen can avoid natural calamities.” The Peravai has sent a representation to the Chief Minister and the Fisheries Minister.
