Crown, jewels stolen from Poondi basilica

Miscreants stole gold plated crown, four sovereign necklace and 3.5 sovereign rosary of the Poondi Madha basilica in Thirukattupalli, Thanjavur on Saturday.

When the church staffer David came to open the basilica at around 4.50 am on Saturday, he was shocked to see the doors of the church lying open. The staffer found that gold ornaments on the idol were missing and soon passed on the information to the Rector Fr Alphonse. The father immediately rushed to the spot and inspected the idol and found that the gold plated crown, four sovereign necklace and 3.5 sovereign rosary had gone missing. Among the missing valuable articles, the value of the crown was yet to be known.

Meanwhile, the Thirukattupalli police who came to the spot on information combed the CCTV footage. Based on the footage, an unidentified person was found hiding near the idol and soon he covered the CCTV cameras with a cloth. The inspector Kennedy has registered a case and an investigation is on.
