Cop who hit speeding biker with a lathi suspended

Police said Rakesh, who was driving the bike with his friend riding pillion, tried to speed away when asked to stop during a routine drive against riders not wearing helmets in Kallupalam area on Thursday.

An agitated traffic constable hit a speeding biker with his lathi while trying to stop him for not wearing a helmet, little realising it had injured him badly.

The constable has been suspended, pending inquiry.

CCTV footage of the incident which went viral showed Rakesh (25) with a bleeding head injury and onlookers gathered at the spot.

Apparently the biker stopped the two wheeler a few metres away after being hit and was seen showing the injury and narrating the incident to the people from the spot where it occurred on Thursday.

Later, a shaken Rajesh was put on a vehicle and taken to a government hospital for treatment.

Enraged locals gathered at the spot and began to rough up the constable before he was rescued by his colleagues and some members of the public.
