CoP office canteen fined for using plastics

Officials of the Coimbatore Corporation have slapped a fine of Rs 3,000 on the contractor of the canteen at police commissioner office for using banned plastic items.

Following complaints from public, a team of Corporation Central Zone officials carried out a surprise check and found the canteen using banned plastic covers for selling parcel food.


“We have seized about half a kilogram of plastic covers. Only a few months ago, the canteen functioning at the superintendent of police’s office was fined Rs 5,000 for using banned plastic items,” said theofficial.


The State government had banned the use of 14 types of plastic products from January 1,2019. The officials said that they would continue to hold inspections in shops and commercial establishments to prevent plastic use. Following this, the canteen at the commissioner office has informed the customers to bring their own vessels to buy parcel food.
