Kumar had won the 1996 Assembly election from Nellithoppe constituency. However, he had later resigned his seat to enable Chief Minister V Narayanasamy to contest and become a member of the Territorial Assembly.

Narayanasamy was not a member of  the Assembly and was selected  by the AICC as the Chief Minister. Narayanasamy contested the byelection from Nellithoppe and won.

John Kumar will file his nomination papers on Monday, the last date for filing of  nominations.

The Kamaraj Nagar Assembly seat  fell vacant  following then  Speaker V Vaithilingam’s (INC) resignation to successfully contest the Lok Sabha election held in this year.

Meanwhile, the N R Congress party has announced former party legislator Nehru alias Kuppusamy as its candidate for the Kamaraj Nagar byelection. Nehru had already started his campaign.
