Citizenship Act, draconian: Thiruma

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Saturday condemned the BJP-led Centre for passing the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which is based on religion to ostracise a section of people.

Addressing a demonstration here at the Chennai Collectorate, Thirumavalavan, MP of Chidambaram constituency, said that Parliament has adopted a draconian Bill, attacking the fundamentals of Indian Constitution.

Terming the Bill as anti-Islam, Thirumavalavan wondered why the Lankan Tamils were ignored from the Bill. “There are over 1 lakh Sri Lankan Tamils, ie, Eelam Tamils in the country. 70,000 are still in refugee camps. By your definition, they would be considered as Hindus. But why the BJP government ignored them,” the VCK leader asked.

Alleging that the Tamils and Muslims are being ignored by the Centre, Thirumavalavan urged the Opposition to be united on the protests against the CAB. The demonstrators raised slogans criticising Prime Minister Narendra Mondi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for imposing a Bill that has unleased unrest in northeast.
