The deceased, identified as Brindha (14), a class 9 student, and her brother Dharshan (11), a Class 6 student, had accidentally drifted into deeper part of the river and drowned, police said.

The children went to the river along with their parents Selvaraj and Sumathi, residents of Ambedkar Nagar in Coimbatore.

Police said the family had gone to attend the wedding of a family friend in Arasur near Sathyamangalam in Erode district. After attending the function, they went to the river in the Arasur neighbourhood to have a bath. The family was accompanied by two of their friends.

While Sumathi and Selvaraj were taking a dip, Dharshan suddenly moved to a deeper part of the river. Unable to swim, the boy began to drown. Upon seeing her brother struggling, Brindha attempted to rescue him. Shocked on seeing their children’s struggle, parents called for help. But, before other villagers could rush and rescue the duo, the siblings drowned.

After receiving information, fire and rescue services personnel reached the spot and fished out the bodies after a search for over two hours. The bodies were then sent for post-mortem to Sathyamangalam Government Hospital. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
