C Jayashanker, the owner of a roadside eatery - J Brindha Hotel - at Saidapet in Arni town, announced that he would sell idlis, parottas and half litre water bottle each at Re 1 on January 1 in the view of new year. The announcement naturally attracted a huge crowd because idlis and parottas in the small eateries are usually sold for around Rs 5 per piece and half litre drinking water bottle costs aroundRs 10.

Though takeaways (parcels) was strictly not encouraged, on Wednesday, Jayashanker sold 2,700 parottas, 600 idlis and 160 half litre water bottles. In the three hours when business was brisk, Jayashanker himself flipped parottas and gave them to an eager public while his assistant doled out the idlis. Jayashanker earned Rs 3,460for the day.
