61 municipalities in TN to be headed by women

The state government on Wednesday notified the reservation to the offices of the chairpersons of municipalities for people belonging to the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and women. The notification is a follow up to the announcement made by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in 2016, under which the local body posts reserved up to 50 percent for women.

The state has 121 municipalities and now 61 municipalities will now have women chairpersons to head the local bodies. Most of the municipal areas with reserve forests as boundaries has been reserved for tribes and scheduled castes. Gudalur in The Nilgiris district has been reserved for scheduled tribes (women) while Valparai, Udhagamandalam, Coonor, Sankarankoil, Peranampet, Ranipet, Sirkazhi, Thiruthuraipoondi and Perambalur municipalities have been reserved for scheduled castes (women). Nellikuppam, Arakkonam, Nelliyalam, Attur, Thiruverkadu, Narasingapuram, Koothanalur and Maramalainagar reserved for scheduled castes (general).


A total of 51 municipalities will be represented by chairwomen.


Probe into auctioning plaints


Meanwhile, poll officials have begun the investigations on local body posts being auctioned ahead of civic polls. Auction by villagers have surfaced from Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Cuddalore, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri districts. Reports from poll observers and district collectors are waited for further action, poll officials said.
