CHENNAI: In a tragic turn of events, a 100-foot high flagpole being installed at a fast pace for TVK’s Madurai conference on Thursday came down crashing in the presence of hundreds of cadre on Wednesday, landing on a party worker’s car parked in the venue.

No one was hurt in the incident as the car didn’t have any occupants at that time. TVK workers are racing against time to re-install a flagpole, however small, to ensure president Vijay unfurls the party flag at the conference in the temple city on Thursday.

TVK’s second state conference, scheduled to be held at Parapathi along Madurai-Thoothukudi highway in Madurai on Thursday, was buzzing with fresh activity to bury the flagpole incident by installing a fresh one, even if not as high as 100 feet as planned.

Even as reasons for the flagpole’s crash, poor foundation, support crane’s failure, and nuts and bolts issues are being looked into, Madurai Superintendent of Police BK Arvind inspected the spot to ensure safety arrangements.

TVK’s deputy general secretary, CTR Nirmal Kumar, termed the incident unfortunate and added that arrangements were being made to erect the flagpole at some other place within the conference venue.
