Real Madrid suffers defeat in CL opener

Real Madrid suffered a shock 2-3 defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk in its Champions League (CL) group stage opener here on Wednesday.

Real, which was down by three goals at the break, reduced the deficit to one around the hour mark, but could not complete a comeback. Fellow La Liga club Atletico Madrid was thrashed 0-4 by defending champion Bayern Munich away from home.

Premier League holder Liverpool churned out a 1-0 win at Ajax, while host Manchester City survived an early scare to defeat Porto 3-1. Inter Milan played out a 2-2 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach, with Atalanta getting all three points in a 4-0 demolition of Midtjylland.

Elsewhere, Olympiacos recorded a 1-0 victory over Marseille, while RB Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
