Three Indians, including top seed Prajnesh Gunneswaran, moved into the third round of the Chennai Open Challenger at the SDAT Tennis Stadium here on Wednesday.
Prajnesh defeated German Daniel Altmaier 6-4 6-4 in a highly-competitive centre court encounter. Arjun Kadhe and Saketh Myneni also won in straight sets to secure a spot in the next round. In the match between Prajnesh and Altmaier, the latter was down 15-40 in the first game. But he delivered two good serves to take a 1-0 lead. The match was on an even keel as the scores were locked at four each in the opening set.
The local lad won the crucial break of serve in the 9th game to go 5-4 up. He then wrapped up the set 6-4, thanks to an ace. In the second set, Prajnesh broke Altmaier in the first game and it proved to be decisive. The 29-year-old never allowed his German opponent to break his serve and saw out the set 6-4.
11th-seeded Indian Saketh was challenged by local player N Vijay Sundar Prashanth in the second show court match. Vijay blinked first, breaking Saketh in the third game to hold a one-game cushion. He then held his serve to have a 3-1 lead. In the next game, Saketh dished out three searing serves and followed it up with an ace to reduce the deficit. He held his remaining serves and broke Vijay twice to bag the first set 6-4.
Saketh maintained the momentum in the second set and held his serve throughout. Vijay was broken in the eighth game and it proved to be the turning point as the Chennai-based player endured a defeat, losing the final set 3-6. In another match, Kadhe racked up seven aces to upset 13th seed Jose Hernandez-Fernandes of the Dominican Republic in two sets.
After leading 3-1, Kadhe brought the first set to a close at 6-3. He once again had a 3-1 cushion, in the second set, and won it by an even better margin at 6-2. Second-seeded Frenchman Corentin Moutet battled it out against Luke Saville of Australia, edging him 6-2 6-7(1) 6-4. Moutet was made to sweat for over two and a half hours by the Australian, but trumped in the see-saw battle.
Prajnesh will meet country mate Kadhe on Thursday while Saketh will square off against Spaniard Alejandro Daviddovich Fokina.
