Arsenal shoots down error-strewn Liverpool

Arsenal capitalised on shocking errors from Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Alisson to beat the champion 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and end its hopes of a record points tally for the Premier League season.

The loss means Liverpool, on 93 points, can now only stretch that tally to 99, one short of Manchester City’s record. Arsenal’s first win against Liverpool since April 2015 lifts it to ninth on 53 points. The away side opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Sadio Mane lashed in the ball from close range.

Yet the home team, starting without its leading scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, was handed a free pass back into the game 12 minutes later. van Dijk made a back pass straight into the path of Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette, with the Frenchman calmly rounding off Fabinho and goalkeeper Alisson to equalise. A second moment of calamitous work at the back from Liverpool gifted the lead to Arsenal before the break. Alisson attempted a chipped ball out to Andy Robertson, which Lacazette ran onto and pulled back to Reiss Nelson.

The 20-year-old turned and shaped his shot beyond the diving keeper into the bottom left corner. Earlier in the day, Manchester City defeated relegation-threatened Bournemouth 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, thanks to first-half goals from David Silva and Gabriel Jesus.

 RESULTS:

Premier League: Arsenal 2 beat Liverpool 1; Manchester City 2 beat Bournemouth 1; Burnley 1 drew with Wolverhampton Wanderers 1; Newcastle United 1 lost to Tottenham Hostpur 3.

Serie A: Sassuolo 3 drew with Juventus 3; Lecce 1 lost to Fiorentina 3; Roma 2 beat Verona 1; Udinese 0 drew with Lazio 0; AC Milan 3 beat Parma 1; Bologna 1 drew with Napoli 1; Sampdoria 3 beat Cagliari 0.
