It was heartbreak for Anand, who once again failed to convert from a clearly better position against Liren. Anand missed a winning knight move against Liren and once that happened, the Indian slowly allowed his opponent to crawl back into the game, missing a few more chances to win. Though it was a long fight, he never achieved a winning position after the queens were exchanged.

Despite having more than 50 minutes on his clock, Anand looked visibly nervous and lacked decisive play to finish off the game. World Champion Magnus Carlsen had stated after the sixth round that 'this is definitely the time to make a move'. The seventh round marked the first of two whites in succession for him.

But he played out a draw, stretching his long undefeated streak in classical games to 85. Carlsen drew with Ian Nepomniachtchi in Gruenfeld in an original way.
