Heavy rains have been forecast for Mumbai, Thane and other parts of the Konkan, officials said here on Thursday.

As a precautionery measure Education Minister Ashish Shelar declared a holiday for all schools and junior colleges in Mumbai and surroundings.

In an early morning tweet, he said district collectors elsewhere can take a call depending on the local situation.

Mumbai and the coastal Konkan districts have been lashed by a fresh spell of rain since the past three days and the India Meteorological Department has predicted a wet week for the region.
