Police arrested Mercil Jerome (28), a resident of Anna Nagar following a complaint from K Krishnaveni (37), a resident of Medavakkam. Police said Jerome had registered on an online matrimonial portal. He chanced upon the profile of Krishnaveni and collected her contact information from the site. He started messaging Krishnaveni and expressed his desire to marry her.

However, she turned down his request. Undeterred, Jerome started calling and messaging her frequently demanding that she go out with him. He also allegedly demanded sexual favours and continued to harass her. 

On Tuesday, he entered Krishnaveni’s house and started abusing her. Krishnaveni managed to alert the Pallikkarani police. A police team rushed to the spot and nabbed Jerome. The police registered a case against Jerome. He was later produced before the magistrate court and was remanded to judicial custody.
