“How could a car be booked for violating a helmet rule that too when the vehicle was not even at the spot when the offence took place? Since it will be in the records, when I get caught for an offence next time, I need a response from the traffic police in this regard,” Alex told DT Next.

Madipakkam traffic police clarified that it could be a minor error by the enforcement officer resulting in the blunder. “The actual offender paid the penalty minutes after the offence. A small error while entering the vehicle registration number would have caused the confusion,” said inspector Sivasankaran.

Additional Commissioner (Traffic) A Arun said that they have come across similar complaints after the automated penalty system was introduced in the city. “The ANPR cameras might not have captured the number properly or the challans could have been sent to the old addresses. We are looking to address these glitches,” he said.
