District details

Kancheepuram district was created on July 1, 1997, when the then Chengalpattu-MGR district was split into two, the other being Tiruvallur district. Since then, the number of taluks has gone up from eight to 12. Kancheepuram is the second most populated district after Chennai with 3,998,252 headcount as per 2011 census. Sriperumbudur taluk here is a major manufacturing hub in the country, with number of automobile manufacturing and IT companies. The district also has a number of tourist attractions including Mamallapuram, Vedanthangal and temples in Kancheepuram. 

32. Chengalpattu 

Total No of voters: 2,52,409 

Votes polled: 1,86,867

Polling percentage: 74.08% 

Winner: D Murugesan (DMDK)

Runner-up: VG Rangasamy (PMK)

Margin: 291 votes

PG Anoor Jagadeesan of AIADMK has won here three consecutive times in 1977, 1980 and 1984 elections. Winning parties: DMDK (2011), PMK (2006), PMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989), ADK (1984).

33. Thiruporur

Total No of voters: 1,92,007

Votes polled: 1,58,639

Polling percentage: 82.62% 

Winner: K Manoharan (AIADMK)

Runner-up: K Arumugam (PMK)

Margin: 18,288 votes

A newly formed constituency after the delimitation. It has parts of Chengalpattu, Thirukazhukunram, Kalpakkam and Mamallapuram segments. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

34. Cheyyur (SC)

Total No of voters: 1,73,908

Votes polled: 1,40,871

Polling percentage: 81% 

Winner: VS Raji (AIADMK)

Runner-up: D Parventhan (VCK)

Margin: 26,584 votes

A newly formed constituency after delimitation, under the Kancheepuram parliament constituency Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

35. Madurantakam (SC)

Total No of voters: 1,80,482

Votes polled: 1,47,744

Polling percentage: 81.88% 

Winner: S Kanitha (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Dr K Jayakumar (INC)

Margin: 18,494 votes

The Madurantakam constituency was delcared reserved category after delimitation. C Arumugam of DMK was a three-time MLA in the constituency in 1971, 1977 and 1984. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), INC (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), ADK (1989).

36. Uthiramerur

Total No of voters: 1,94,258

Votes polled: 1,67,949

Polling percentage: 86.46% 

Winner: P Ganesan (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Ponkumar (DMK)

Margin: 13,766 votes

Winning party of this constituency was forming the state government from 1962 to 2011. K Sundar of DMK was a three-time MLA from here in 1989, 1996 and 2006. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989).

37. Kancheepuram

Total No of voters: 2,37,837

Votes polled: 1,92,235

Polling percentage: 80.83% 

Winner: V Somasundaram (AIADMK)

Runner-up: PS Ulagarakshagan (PMK)

Margin: 25,717 votes

Though it is the hometown of DMK founder and former Chief Minister CN Annadurai, the constituency has seen 7 MLAs from AIADMK and only 4 MLAs from DMK. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), PMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991) and DMK (1989).
