District details

One of the lowest rated districts in literacy, with only 71.46 per cent after Dharmapuri and Ariyalur, Krishnagiri is among the lowest in sex ratio as well at just 958. Krishnagiri’s industrial town Hosur has a large labour community settled here from various parts of state and country. Formed as the 30th district of the state, it was carved out from Dharmapuri in February 2004 with five taluks and ten blocks. 

There were only three female contestants out of 50 candidates during the 2011 assembly elections. Uthangarai (SC) constituency witnessed only seven candidates, (lowest in the district). Veppanahalli constituency registered only five 49(O) even as the whole district had polled 381 49(O). Out of six constituencies in the district, four seats were won by AIADMK front and two by DMK front in 2011. 

51. Uthangarai (SC) 

Total No of voters: 1,86,855 

Votes polled: 1,53,391

Polling percentage: 82.14% 

Winner: Manoranjitham (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Muniyammal (VCK)

Margin: 39,158 votes

Manoranjitham secured 58.92 per cent of votes in 2011. Uthangarai got the status of constituency after delimitation in 2009. Previously it was a constituency in 1967 and 1971 elections. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (1971) and INC (1967).

52. Bargur

Total No of voters: 1,93,531

Votes polled: 1,58,363

Polling percentage: 81.86%

Winner: KE Krishnamurthi (AIADMK)

Runner-up: TK Raja (PMK)

Margin: 29,440 votes

An AIADMK fort with 8 wins in 11 elections. J Jayalalithaa was an MLA from here during her tenure in 1991 as Chief Minister. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2009 by-election), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996) and ADK (1991 and 1989).

53. Krishnagiri 

Total No of voters: 2,01,926 

Votes polled: 1,60,379

Polling percentage: 79.50% 

Winner: KP Munusamy (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Syed Ghiyas Ul Haq (INC) 

Margin: 29,097 votes

Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system will be used in 2016 election here. The winning party in the constituency has been forming the government in the state since 1971. KR Chinnaraju of ADK was a threetime MLA of the constituency in 1977, 1980 and 1984. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991) and DMK (1989).

54. Veppanahalli 

Total No of voters: 1,85,746

Votes polled: 1,58,504

Polling percentage: 85.36% 

Winner: T Senguttuvan (DMK)

Runner-up: Kandan alias Murugesan SM (DMDK) 

Margin: 7,604 votes

Parts of Assembly segments of Krishnagiri and Hosur were reorganised to form this constituency in 2009. Winning party: DMK (2011)

55. Hosur 

Total No of voters: 2,29,478

Votes polled: 1,72,106

Polling percentage: 75.01% 

Winner: K Gopinath (INC)

Runner-up: S John Timothy (DMDK) 

Margin: 14,152 votes

A stronghold for INC with 9 wins in 12 elections from 1962. K Gopinath of INC is holding the MLA position from 2001 till now. As it’s located close to Karnataka, Janata Dal is also a major political party here and registered a win in 1996. Winning parties: INC (2011), INC (2006), INC (2001), JD (1996), INC (1991), INC (1989 and 1984).

56. Thalli 

Total No of voters: 1,84,376 

Votes polled: 1,55,238

Polling percentage: 84.21% 

Winner: Ramachandran T (CPI)

Runner-up: Prakaash Y (DMK)

Margin: 6,435 votes

The CPI MLA of Thalli constituency, T Ramachandran, was arrested under the Goondas Act in 2012. He contested as an independent and won the seat in 2006. Winning parties: CPI (2011), IND (2006), BJP (2001), CPI (1996), INC (1991) and JNP (1989).
