District details of Villupuram

The largest district in the state with a sprawling 7,194 sq km, Villupuram is surrounded by Cuddalore in East and South, Salem and Dharmapuri in West, Thiruvannamalai and Kanchipuram districts in North. The district has sex ratio of 987 and the literacy rate is at 71.88 per cent as per 2011 Census. Among the 26,02,971 voters in the district, as of 2015 January, Ulundurpettai constituency has maximum voters (2,69,336) and Mailam constituency comes last with 2,08,631 voters. C Ve Shanmugam of AIADMK and Ponmudy of DMK are their party’s well-known leaders in the district. Rishivandiyam constituency, in which Vijayakant contested in 2011, didn’t register any NOTA, while the number of NOTAs registered in the district was 280. Three other constituencies in the district witnessed less then 10 NOTAs — Mailam (2) and Tindivanam (2) and Gingee (6). With three reserved constituencies — Tindivanam, Vanur and Kallakurichi — the district saw 103 men and six women candidates in the 2011 Assembly election.

Winner: Venkatesan L (DMDK)
Runner-up: Thangam M (DMK)
Margin: 8,791 votes

Thirukkoyilur was a constituency from 1952 to 1971. After delimitation in 2008, Mugaiyur constituency (the largest constituency of Villupuram) was reorganised and Tirukkoyilur was created. Winning parties: DMDK (2011), DMK (1971), INC (1967), INC (1962 and 1957).

77. Ulundurpettai

Votes polled: 1,91,047
Polling percentage:  83.41%
Winner: Kumaraguru R (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Mohamedyousuf M (VCK)
Margin: 53,508 votes

The winning party of the constituency is forming the government in the state since 1984. M Anandan of ADMK won from here twice in 1984 and 1991. From 1971 to 1980, DMK was a consistent winner here. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).

78. Rishivandiyam

Votes polled: 1,71,405
Polling percentage: 82.88%  
Winner: Vijayakant (DMDK)
Runner-up: Sivaraj S (INC)
Margin: 30,795 votes

The constituency was an INC fort. A reserved constituency till 1971, it was later included in under general category. DMDK president Vijayakant won the 2011 election with a margin of 30,000 plus votes against the four-time MLA of the constituency Sivaraj of INC. Winning parties: DMDK (2011), INC (2006), TMC (2001), TMC (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and INC (1984 and 1980).

79. Sankarapuram

Total No of voters: 2,08,838
Votes polled: 1,70,824
Polling percentage: 82.04%
Winner: Mohan P (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Udhayasuriyan T (DMK)
Margin: 12,198 votes

After abolishing Chinna Salem constituency, a few parts of it were added to Sankarapuram. Ramasamy C of ADK won the 1991 election with 68.06 per cent votes. Kalitheerthan of ADK consecutively won the constituency twice in 1980 and 1984. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), PMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991 and DMK (1989).

80. Kallakurichi (SC)

Total No of voters: 2,17,252
Votes polled: 1,78,906
Polling percentage: 82.36%
Winner: K Alaguvelu (AIADMK)
Runner-up: A C Pavarasu (VCK)
Margin: 59,998 votes

Kallakurichi was a general constituency between 1952 and 1971 elections and then renamed as Chinna Salem constituency. During the delimitation process in 2008, Chinna Salem was scrapped and the Kallakurichi reserved constituency was created. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (1971), DMK (1967 and 1962).
