Suspended for gangster's murder; SSI kills self in Chennai

CHENNAI: A special sub-inspector (SSI) who was suspended after the history sheeter's murder inside Kilpauk Medical College Hospital premises three weeks ago, died by suicide at his residence in Sevvapet on Wednesday.

The deceased SSI, identified as Giridharan Nagarathinam (57), was attached to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital police station. He was among the five police personnel placed under suspension after gangster R Adhikesavan alias Adhi (23) was murdered by a gang inside the hospital premises on January 12.

Police sources said that Giridharan was due for retirement in a couple of years and was distressed over the suspension. He was found dead in his room by his family on Wednesday evening. Police are looking to see if he left behind any suicide note and are also inquiring with the family.

The Sevvapet Police have registered a case and are investigating.

Adhikesavan was murdered within weeks of his release from prison in another case. He went to the hospital for moral support for his friend, Suchitra (21), whose newborn died without responding to treatment on January 11. An inebriated Adhi was sleeping near the labour ward along with other patient attendants when a gang rounded him up and murdered him.

The city police subsequently arrested eight accused, including two women, suspended five personnel, including SSI Giridharan and four constables, for alleged negligence in hospital security duties.
