Stranded athletes back in city

The 11 sportspersons from Tamil Nadu, who were stranded in Turkey following a coup attempt, safely arrived in Chennai on Tuesday evening.

The sportspersons were part of the Indian contingent that went to Turkey to participate in World School Olympic Games. The athletes were given a rousing reception by their parents and friends at the airport here as their flight from New Delhi touched down at around 5 pm. Talking to reporters, the athletes said they were happy to return home safely. They thanked the embassy officials in Ankara, the Indian government and the Tamil Nadu government for ensuring   their safe return.   They said they did not face any problem and their safety was never in question during the coup attempt that left several people dead. The athletes were stranded at the Games Village at Trapzone, about 800 km from the capital city of Ankara.
