SHRC notice to CoP for not arresting rape accused

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has issued a notice to the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner seeking a detailed report within three weeks as to why the city police have not arrested the accused in connection with the gang rape of a mentally-challenged woman in TP Chathiram.

The incident reportedly happened in the wee hours of August 13 when the 22-year-old victim was asleep alongside her mother at their roadside hut in TP Chathiram. Three men, one of them identified as Lingan, entered the hut and threatened the mother and daughter at knifepoint and sexually assaulted the mentally-challenged woman in front of her mother before fleeing the spot.

The duo approached Kilpauk all-women police station within hours and an FIR is also said to have been registered. However, there was allegedly no action from the police. When contacted, Kilpuak all-women police confirmed that an FIR has been registered but by then inspector Amudha tested positive for COVID and has been on leave. Vepery all-women police inspector Thaarani, who was in charge, was not available for comment.
