Security tightens for Republic Day

Security has been beefed up in the Union Territory, in view of the Republic Day celebrations here tomorrow.

The entire area of Indira Gandhi sports complex her,e where the Republic Day function would be held, was under tight security.

Police utilised the service of sniffer dogs in the nearby areas of the sports compex to detect bombs. All the  hotels and lodging place were searched for strangers, and vehicles entering Puducherry were subjected to checking at border points.

As many as 600 police personnel were being deployed on security duty.

For the second successive year, Puducherry Chief Minister, N Rangasamy, in the absence of a full-fledged Lt,Governor for the Union Territory, would unfurl the tricolour to  mark the  Republic Day celebrations here tomorrow.

It may be noted that A K Singh, Lt.Governor of Andaman and Nicobar is holding an additional charge of Puducherry for over two years, and since, he will have to hoist the tricolour at Andaman, Mr Rangasamy will unfurl it on behalf of him.
