Section 144 clamped on Marina

With a fresh round of messages on social media calling for another congregation on the Marina, the police as part of a preventive measures imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in areas falling under Marina, Ice House, Foreshore Estate, Triplicane and Anna Square police stations from January 29 to February 12.

In his order, S George said that under Sec 144, all assemblies, precessions, fasts, demonstrations, human chains, meetings and movement of groups are prohibited in these areas.

However, peaceful visits to the beach by families, children and walkers for recreation and re laxation will not be affected due to the prohibitory orders. Police have already deployed thousands of Armed Reserve policemen, equipped with riot gear on Kamaraj Salai., anticipating further congregation of people.

Additional Commissioner, South, K Shankar said that any congregation will be seen as going against the existing order, and those violating the order will be prosecuted. S George said that he has reason to believe that the infiltration of anti-social elements and anti-nationals in the peaceful agitation at Marina resulted in riots with violence and arson, causing injuries to police and the public.

Justifying the decision to impose Sec 144, he said that even after their demands have been met by the government, a certain section of protesters have been trying to mobilise people through social media to again congregate in large numbers at Marina to further their anti-national agenda and this may once again lead to widespread violence.
