Scolded by parents, girl immolates self

A 14-year-old set herself ablaze in Aminjikarai after allegedly being scolded by her parents for stealing money from a relative’s house.

The deceased, P Malathi of PP Garden in Aminjikarai, was a Class 8 government school student. Around 5 pm on Monday, Malathi poured kerosene and set herself ablaze in the bedroom. Her parents put off the fire and rushed her to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. However, Malathi, who had suffered 95 per cent burns, died without responding to treatment in the zero hours of Tuesday. On information, Aminjikarai police conducted inquiries and said that the girl recently stole money from a relative’s house and was scolded by her mother Gomathi for the same. Police suspect that Malathi might have ended her life unable to face the humiliation. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
