Sources said the burglars, who saw the ATM machine being filled with cash in the evening, reached the area late at night after movement of people was almost nil, managed to break the ATM with a gas-welder and looted the money.

Police were informed by some local people on Saturday morning after they were shocked to see the broken machine. Police rushed the spot with forensic experts to collect fingerprints and started investigation.

According to the sources, CCTV cameras installed inside the ATM were cleverly turned towards the wall by the burglars so that their images could not be captured by them. The sniffer dog brought to the scene to find any clue ran a few metres from the ATM and stopped. Police have registered a case and are investigating.

In another incident, a bid to rob a private bank ATM in RK Pettai Pudur Medu village, near Tiruttani, by two persons was foiled by some alert residents in the locality in the wee hours of Saturday. Sources said after breaking the CCTV cameras in the ATM, two persons were trying to break the machine of a private bank. People nearby rushed to the place and found two persons running from the ATM booth.
