Royapuram man arrested at Mumbai airport on sexual assault charges

CHENNAI: The city police arrested a man from Mumbai on charges of harassing a woman based on a complaint filed by a city resident months after she was harassed on the road by the accused.

The complainant, a native of Puducherry, was working at a private firm in the city and resided at a hostel in Tiruvanmiyur. On January 30, the woman was walking along Damodarapuram Main Road in Besant Nagar, on her way to work, when the accused trailed her in his two-wheeler.

The accused had asked her to ride pillion with him on his bike, and he would drop her at her destination. When the woman questioned him as to who he was, the man allegedly touched her inappropriately and fled the scene.

A complaint was filed with the Adyar AWPS (All Women Police Station).

The accused, Gopal (41) of Royapuram, had travelled abroad for work, and a lookout circular was issued against him. He was secured by the authorities at Mumbai Airport on December 21, on his arrival from China.

The accused was brought to the city, produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
