Rain, thunderstorm likely in city: Met

Chennai and other 12 districts of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive thunderstorm and light to moderate rain for the next 24 hours due to the southwest monsoon wind and heatwave, said a communication from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

“Districts like Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari would witness thunderstorm activity with light to moderate rainfall for the next 24 hours. As far as Chennai is concerned, the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy, and light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at some areas in the city,” said N Puviarasan, Director, RMC.

He added that the maximum temperature will be recorded around 37 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature would be around 29 degrees Celsius on Saturday. For the next 48 hours, the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy; the maximum and minimum temperature will be around 39 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius respectively.

“Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, the amount of rainfall recorded in various districts in TN are 3 cm in The Nilgris, 2 cm each in Kanniyakumari and Coimbatore and 1 cm each in Tirupathur, Dharmapuri and Dindigul,” Purviarasan said.
