Speaking on the topic “Preparing for Accreditation” at a meeting organised by PanIIT Leadership Series and IIT Alumni Industry Interaction Centre, Chennai, Dr. R. Rudramoorthy, principal of the PSG College of Technology and chairman of southern region at All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), said that instead of assignment presentation the institution had introduced open book exam.

“In the past we used to have a tutorial session with all students in the classroom, after which they will take a closed book test. Now we are allowing students to bring their book and solve the test,” he said. Explaining the objective of the test, Rudramoorthy said that students would gain knowledge and know how to use books to solve problems.

Otherwise, they would not take any initiative to solve a problem. About the accreditation process followed by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), he said the new approval process was based on the US-Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology model.

“Engineering college students are expected to work with engineers outside India too. Technical education has become more internationalised, requirements and outcome are more internationalised. We (Indians) are still in initial stages of the Washington Accord and are yet to be fully accepted as a full-time member,” he said. Dr. T.V. Geetha, Director of centre for academic courses at Anna University, who also spoke at the event said that the university was in the process of revamping curriculum.

“We have now revamped curriculum for the courses offered in university departments. I invite all stakeholders to send in their suggestions on flexibility to be incorporated, which can create a passion among students and bring in inter-disciplinary education,” she said.
