Prison official dies of virus, 39 inmates infected in State so far

A 57-year-old probationary officer with Egmore office of the Prison department died of COVID-19 at Omandurar hospital on Friday. He was a resident of prison quarters in Puzhal.

Tamil Nadu prison officials, on Friday, also confirmed that as many as 39 prisoners and one staff have tested positive for COVID-19 across five central prisons in the State.

“Of these, 31 are from Puzhal prison complex, while the rest are from central jails in Cuddalore, Tiruchy, Madurai and Palayamkottai,” a senior jail official said.

All those tested positive for the virus are now being quarantined at Puzhal jail hospital and are under the care of a medical team from outside, the official said.

Meanwhile, city police sources, on Friday, said that as many as 306 police personnel have been tested positive for the virus so far in Chennai. In Tamil Nadu police headquarters alone, 22 persons have tested positive so far, including four on Friday.
