Now, extended zone residents can download birth, death certificates

Residents in the extended zones, who were born before the expansion of the city limits, can now download their birth certificates online as the civic body has digitised births and deaths recorded in those areas.

Before the digitisation, the residents were unable to download birth and death certificates and they had to visit the local offices to get copies of the certificates. Now certificates can be downloaded from www.chennaicorporation.gov.in.

“We have been issuing birth and death certificates online for several years and the certificates that had registered prior to computerisation are also digitized now. As the extended zones were added to the Corporation in 2011, we could not provide older certificates online,” a Chennai Corporation higher official said.

The official added that the digitising of old certificates took two years and the work was completed a few days ago. However, birth and death certificates registered after the merger have already been made online.

“Our officials had to verify each and every certificate through personal inspections and by collating several files maintained by the erstwhile local panchayats and municipalities, which were merged with the Chennai Corporation. This took two years to complete,” the official explained. If the residents had failed to register a birth or death within a year of the event, they should contact their respected tahsildar offices to get certificates.
