The order was passed by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana while disposing of a petition from two persons, P Sundarraj and R Kannan.

The government has allocated Rs 120 crore for the festival and expects more than 35 lakh devotees to visit the temple town for the holy bath in the Mahamaham tank in February, 2016.

Oct 9: Report on expenses for the festival sought from government 

On Nov 3: Officials told to filed status report on arrangements made for the event 

Dec 11: Administration directed to take strict action on encroachments

• Earlier in Sept responding to social activists’ appeal, local body agreed to keep the event free of manual scavenging.
• Besides these, all tanks in Kumbakonam will be desilted by the PWD. 72 police booths, 35 watch towers and 132 surveillance cameras to be installed.  
• The government transport corporations to ply special bus and train services to Kumbakonam.
